Shaping the piece...  ·  I use a 6 inch disc sander with fine paper to shape the piece to final dimensions. The actual final shape is not very important, so long as the groove is left as is and the flanges on either side of the groove are not narrowed down. Also, the amount of wood left at the bottom should be enough to securely mount the cannon stud after a hole is drilled.
